Apprentice Commis Chef - Canary Wharf

Job Introduction

Based in one of our busy kitchens in Canary Wharf, you would learn the different sections within the kitchen, gain experience with food preparation, cooking techniques and work safely within HSE guidance.

Tasks could include, but not limited to:

  • Comply with all client and Restaurant Associates health & safety procedures and standards including adherence to food information regulations, allergens and food safety checks
  • Preparing, cooking and presenting dishes to the Restaurant Associates standards and portion specifications
  • Directing the tasks and training any commis chefs or kitchen assistants working in your section
  • Ensuring food is recovered and stored correctly to minimise waste and to comply with healthy and safety requirements
  • Record food waste accurately
  • Assist with the processing of food orders (where required)
  • Assist with the receipt and storage of deliveries
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all kitchens and surrounding working areas
  • Ensure the correct use of all machinery and equipment
  • Perform other general tasks to support effective food service delivery

There is no supervision of other staff.

More about the role:

Alongside your day-to-day duties, you will complete the Commis Chef Level 2 Apprenticeship. This is a nationally recognised qualification, and the primary objective of the Commis Chef is to learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen. You will either be attending college 1 day per week or you will learn ‘in-unit’. You will be supported through this qualification by your Personal Development Coach who will visit you at your place work every 6-10 weeks. You will also attend 6 workshops including an Introduction Day at a location outside your normal place of work. All travel expenses will be covered by your employer. You are not expected to complete any of your Apprenticeship work outside of your normal working hours and will be given set time each week to complete your work.

What we'll give:

APPRENTICE COMMIS CHEF

SALARY: £11.95 per hour

LOCATION: Canary Wharf, London. E14 5HQ

REPORTING TO: Head Chef

HOURS/WORKING PATTERN: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, earliest start 07:00 and latest finish 22:00

DURATION: Minimum 12-15 months

You do not need to have any experience as full training will be provided as part of the Apprenticeship. This is ideal for a school leaver or someone wanting a career change. Apprenticeships are for everyone regardless of age!

Over a 12–15-month period you will be trained to become a fully Qualified Commis Chef.

Your Apprenticeship is fully funded by Compass UK and Ireland, via the Apprenticeship Levy.

Screening Call – you will receive a screening call to establish if you will be eligible for us to claim funding for your apprenticeship training with our training provider and the rules for this are set out in the ESFA funding rules 2023/2024.

European Social Fund – The Skills Funding Agency operates as a co-financing organisation for ESF and assures EU funding is correctly spent. The European Social Fund (ESF) is a structural fund from the European Union. It improves the skills of the workforce and helps people who have difficulties finding work.
