Job Introduction
Power BI Developer
Birmingham, UK | Hybrid
At Compass Group UK&I, we’re more than just the UK’s leading contract catering company — we’re driving digital transformation across the business. Our Digital & Technology team is at the heart of this journey, creating cutting-edge solutions that improve efficiency, elevate customer experiences, and deliver real business impact.
We're looking for a Power BI Developer to design and deliver business intelligence solutions that help our people make better decisions — across one of the UK's most complex and data-rich organisations.
This is not a dashboard-on-request role. We're looking for someone who takes genuine ownership of their solutions — from understanding the business problem through to building something that actually gets used and trusted. You'll work with autonomy, manage your own delivery, and raise the bar for what good BI looks like across the organisation.
You'll sit at the intersection of data engineering, business stakeholders, and analytics — making sure the insight we surface is accurate, intuitive, and genuinely valuable.
What You'll Be Responsible For
- Designing and developing Power BI solutions — semantic models, reports, and dashboards — that serve real business needs across multiple areas of the organisation
- Writing complex DAX, building star schema data models, and optimising solutions for performance and usability
- Managing your own projects end-to-end, from requirements and scoping through to deployment and support
- Using deployment pipelines and version control to manage environments and releases properly
- Building Power Apps and Power Automate flows that extend Power BI into practical business workflows
- Mentoring junior developers and contributing to governance standards and reusable development patterns
- Collaborating with data engineers to ensure our pipelines and semantic models work seamlessly together
What We're Looking For
- A business-first mindset — someone who asks "what decision does this need to support?" before writing a single measure
- Strong DAX skills, including time intelligence and advanced calculations that go beyond the basics
- Solid understanding of data modelling — star schemas, dimensional design, and how to build models that perform at scale
- Experience with Power Query (M) and SQL for data transformation and preparation
- Working knowledge of Power Apps and Power Automate for building integrated platform solutions
- Experience with Git and deployment pipelines — you manage releases properly, not by overwriting production
- Clear communicator who can translate technical complexity for non-technical stakeholders with confidence
- Microsoft PL-300 certification is required — PL-400 is a bonus, as is experience with Microsoft Fabric
Why Join Us?
You'll be working on a modern Power BI environment connected to a Databricks-powered data platform — building solutions that are used across the UK's largest catering business, not sitting in a folder nobody opens.
We're building a product-led analytics capability where BI is treated as something to be owned, iterated, and continuously improved — not just delivered and forgotten.
If you want to do Power BI properly, at scale, with the platform and team to back you up, we'd love to hear from you.
